Climbing the Butte
Why Montmartre is harder than it appears
Montmartre is the only district in Paris with significant elevation — the Butte rises 130 metres above the city. The streets are steep, narrow, and were never designed for cars. Many are one-way, some have been pedestrianised on weekends, and the upper Butte around Sacré-Cœur is effectively unreachable by vehicle. A driver who doesn't know the district will drop you at the foot of Rue Lepic with three suitcases and a 400-metre climb ahead of you.
The two halves of Montmartre
Lower Montmartre — around Place des Abbesses, Rue Lepic, Avenue Junot — is the residential and most-walkable part. Vehicles can reach most of it. Upper Montmartre — around the Sacré-Cœur and Place du Tertre — is where the climb becomes serious. Hotels like Hôtel Particulier Montmartre, Terrass'' Hotel, and Le Relais Montmartre each require a specific approach route. We know which is which.
Late nights and the Pigalle question
Many Montmartre transfers happen late — flights landing at 23:00, taxis hard to find, the Moulin Rouge area (Pigalle, at the foot of the Butte) crowded and confusing. Our drivers know how to skip Pigalle entirely when needed, approaching the Butte from the quieter Caulaincourt side.
Fixed price for a steep district
